The Cuckoo series follows Yvonne Landis, a woman who has escaped from a mental institution and is accused of murdering her husband. Yvonne insists she did not kill him. She believes her son Gabe did, then used her own history of psychosis to make the authorities see her as the obvious culprit.

She is running from the law, but that is only part of the problem.

Gabe carries deep trauma from the events of the Child trilogy, along with severe anger that he believes can only be managed by killing people he considers bad. Gabe's younger brother Joey also becomes important as the family's secrets and loyalties grow harder to contain.

These books are dark domestic thrillers with a vigilante edge. They are less interested in a neat detective puzzle than in the damage caused when a family has learned to survive by hiding, lying, and making impossible choices. Yvonne has to deal with fugitives, investigators, dangerous people from her past, and Gabe's unpredictable need to act.

The series is part of the Yvonne Landis universe. The Child trilogy is the best place to start if you want the full backstory of Gabe's disappearance and Yvonne's family. Readers who want to get straight to the fugitive storyline can begin with Cuckoo Uncaged, though the earlier books add emotional weight.

The tone is tense and morally uncomfortable. Nobody gets an easy role here, especially Yvonne, who keeps trying to protect her son while confronting the possibility that he is the danger she most needs to stop.
