The Scottish setting matters here. These books feel mistier and more gothic than some of Maxwell's other series. Old houses, wooded paths, family stories, and Highland loyalties all feed the mood. There is still wit and heat, but the atmosphere is more haunted. People are not only fighting attraction. They are fighting prophecy, grief, superstition, and the weight of what their family has been telling itself for generations.

That gives the romance extra tension. A normal historical romance asks whether two people should trust each other. This series asks whether they dare. Love is not just risky. In their minds, it may be fatal. Maxwell gets a lot of mileage out of that fear, especially because her heroines tend to be practical women who do not want to be ruled by old nonsense, until the nonsense starts to look uncomfortably real.

There is also more plot here than in her lighter series. Investigations, disguises, whispered histories, and sudden violence all have a place. The romances still land with real feeling, but the road to them is twistier and stranger.
