Cab Bolton Books in Order

Cab Bolton is not the kind of detective who blends into a crowd. He has movie-star parents, expensive clothes, a sharp sense of humor, and a past that includes work with the FBI and the Naples police. Yet the Cab Bolton books are less interested in glamour than in what people do when their reputations, families, and carefully protected stories begin to crack.

The series begins with The Bone House. Mark and Hilary Bradley have moved to Washington Island, hoping for a quieter life after a scandal damaged Mark's teaching career. When a teenage girl is murdered after Mark encounters her on a beach, the island turns against him quickly. Cab arrives from Florida to investigate, and the case leads into local grudges, old trauma, and a community eager to decide who is guilty before it knows the facts.

Cab is observant, stubborn, and hard to intimidate.

He can be funny, but he does not treat violence or victims lightly. His polished appearance and famous background often make people underestimate him, which gives him an advantage when he is dealing with officials, wealthy suspects, or people who believe a well-told story should be enough to end an investigation. He is drawn to the messy parts of a case, especially when somebody has been made into a convenient scapegoat.

In Season of Fear, Cab is back in Florida and working more independently. A ten-year-old crime, a powerful political family, and questions about whether the right person was punished give the novel its pressure. The setting shifts from the isolated, windswept feeling of Washington Island to a warmer world of influence, money, and connections, but the central concern is similar: who gets protected, and who gets blamed?

The series is brief, but it has a clear personality.

Cab also appears in Alter Ego, a Jonathan Stride novel, which makes that book a worthwhile extra for readers who want more of him. Still, The Bone House and Season of Fear tell a complete two-book arc and can be read in that order without needing knowledge of Freeman's other detectives.

Expect crime stories with multiple suspects, family history, and pressure from people who think their status puts them above the rules. Cab's cases balance dry humor with darker material, and they are a good fit for readers who like a detective who asks the uncomfortable question after everyone else has agreed to move on.
