Ginger Bolton Books in Order

Ginger Bolton is the pen name Janet Bolin uses for the Deputy Donut mysteries, but the two names belong to one steady writing life. Before the donuts came the Threadville books, where she built a small-town mystery world around sewing, embroidery, and the everyday dramas of a close community. That blend of hobby, humor, gossip, and danger still runs through everything she writes.

She came to novels after years of shorter work.

Before launching a series, Bolin published short stories and humorous essays, and more than forty of those essays were read on CBC radio programs. Her mystery work has also earned Agatha nominations. You can feel both sides of that background in the books: the quick pace, the light comic touch, and the pleasure she takes in ordinary people getting pulled into very non-ordinary trouble.

Her first mystery series began with Dire Threads in 2011. The idea grew out of her interest in machine embroidery and sewing software, plus the simple annoyance of living far from the kinds of shops that sold the supplies she wanted. So she imagined Threadville, a place where a maker could find everything on one short street, and then filled it with secrets, friendships, and murder.

That series includes Threaded for Trouble, Thread and Buried, Night of the Living Thread, and Seven Threadly Sins. The books follow Willow Vanderling, who runs an embroidery shop and keeps getting dragged into mysteries. Bolin clearly likes heroines with practical jobs, sharp eyes, and a reason to know everybody in town.

Then she traded thread for fried dough.

Writing as Ginger Bolton, she introduced readers to Emily Westhill in Survival of the Fritters. Emily runs the Deputy Donut Café in Fallingbrook, Wisconsin, with her retired police-chief father-in-law, Tom, and the shop takes its name from Emily's cat, Deputy Donut, or Dep for short. The setup sounds playful, and it is, but the series also gives Emily real problems to solve and real losses to live with.

Books like Goodbye Cruller World, Jealousy Filled Donuts, Boston Scream Murder, and Beyond a Reasonable Donut show what Bolton does well. She writes cozy mysteries with food that sounds dangerously appealing, town events that can go sideways in a hurry, and cases that are more twisty than the bright covers first suggest. Her heroines are not detectives by job title, but they are observers, and that usually matters more.

The later books keep that balance. Deck the Donuts, Cinnamon Twisted, Double Grudge Donuts, Blame the Beignets, and Sour Crime Donuts lean into festivals, holidays, weddings, local rivalries, and all the small pressures that make a town feel real. Readers who like recurring side characters, business-in-peril stakes, and a smart cat nearby will probably feel at home pretty quickly.

Off the page, Bolton's interests line up neatly with the worlds she writes. She has said she is very fond of donuts, coffee, and coffee shops where people are encouraged to linger and talk. She lives in a rural area surrounded by cozy villages, and when she is not reading, writing, or daydreaming out the window, she walks her dogs, plays an electric piano with earphones on so she does not frighten the wildlife, creates minor disasters in the kitchen, and occasionally takes part in local amateur theater productions that become comedies whether they mean to or not.

That feels about right for her books too.
