Author bio
Brian Freeman was born in Chicago in 1963 and grew up in San Mateo, California, in the San Francisco Bay Area. He was a crime-fiction reader early on, thanks in part to a grandmother who loved mysteries and an eighth-grade teacher who gave his writing room to grow.
That early encouragement stuck.
Freeman studied English at Carleton College, graduating in 1984. Before fiction became his full-time focus, he built a career in marketing and public relations, including work with an international law firm. It was useful training for a writer: he learned how institutions work, how people present one version of themselves in public, and how much can be hidden behind polished language.
His first novel, Immoral, arrived in 2005 and introduced Jonathan Stride, a homicide lieutenant in Duluth, Minnesota. The book begins with the disappearance of a teenage girl, but it quickly becomes interested in the people around the case: family members, classmates, local leaders, and witnesses whose stories never quite line up. It won the Macavity Award for Best First Novel and put Freeman on the map as a writer who likes a mystery with emotional fallout.
Duluth became an important part of his work.
The Jonathan Stride books, including Stripped, In the Dark, The Cold Nowhere, and Funeral for a Friend, make use of Lake Superior, hard winters, isolated roads, and the pressure of small communities where everybody knows a little too much about one another. Stride is a capable investigator, but he is also a man carrying grief, regret, and a strong urge to protect people. His colleagues Maggie Bei and Serena Dial bring their own complicated histories to the series.
Freeman has also enjoyed starting over with new places and new kinds of danger. The Frost Easton novels, beginning with The Night Bird, move to San Francisco, where a detective investigates crimes tied to trauma, memory, and psychological treatment. The Cab Bolton books feature a sharp-tongued Florida detective with a famous family background and a tendency to challenge easy answers. His standalones range from the divided Minnesota towns of Spilled Blood to the alternate-reality puzzle of Infinite and the rural suspense of Thief River Falls.
He does not stay in one lane.
In 2020, Freeman took over the Jason Bourne novel series, writing new adventures for Robert Ludlum's amnesiac spy. Those books give him a different canvas, with international operations, Treadstone secrets, betrayals, and a hero who must keep asking what parts of his past are true. Freeman has said that his stories are drawn to the private motives that can push ordinary people over terrible lines, and that idea runs through both his crime novels and his espionage work.
He has also written outside suspense under pen names. The Agency, written as Ally O'Brien with Ali Gunn, follows the messy world of London publishing through literary agent Tess Drake. West 57, published as B.N. Freeman, returns to the publishing business with a lighter, more romantic angle.
Freeman and his wife, Marcia, have lived in Minnesota for many years and now live in Florida. Across his books, the settings may change, but the questions tend to remain close to home: who can be trusted, what does the past still control, and what happens when a secret refuses to stay buried?
