Series background & context
The Burke Brothers books pair family ties with big, colorful romance plots. These are not quiet domestic stories. One brother gets swept into a rescue mission that leads from old heartbreak to a harem, while the other retreats to a haunted Cornish manor and finds trouble waiting in the hallways. What links the books is the contrast between the brothers themselves, and the way Medeiros uses adventure, mystery, and humor to knock both men off balance.
The Pleasure of Your Kiss belongs to Ashton Burke, the restless adventurer of the family. He has spent years roaming the world, only to discover that the woman he is sent to rescue is Clarinda Cardew, the first love he never really got over. That reunion gives the book its pulse. The setting moves well beyond a ballroom, into travel, captivity, and real physical danger, but the strongest tension comes from two people who already know how badly they can hurt each other. It is the more openly swashbuckling of the two books, with a lot of motion and a lot of emotional history packed into the romance.
Then the series changes shape.
The Temptation of Your Touch turns to Maximillian Burke, the more respectable brother, and promptly ruins his sense of order. Jilted and miserable, Max heads to Cadgwyck Manor on the coast of Cornwall expecting solitude. Instead he gets a crumbling estate, a strange household, rumors of a ghost, and a housekeeper, Anne Spencer, who is far more complicated than she looks. This book leans into gothic atmosphere without losing Medeiros's lighter touch. There is mystery in the walls, yes, but the real pleasure is watching a controlled man lose ground to curiosity, desire, and a woman who will not play the role he expects.
That shift in setting is part of what makes the series fun. One book is a globe-spanning romantic adventure. The other is a haunted-house style romance with sea air, old secrets, and a wounded hero trying to recover his footing. Read together, they show how flexible Medeiros can be while still sounding like herself.
If you like historical romance with more plot than pure courtship, the Burke Brothers books are a good bet. They are full of longing, reversals, and men who think they know exactly who they are until love exposes the weak spot. The family link matters, but the books work best as separate character stories. Start with The Pleasure of Your Kiss for the fuller brotherly arc, then move to The Temptation of Your Touch for the moodier, more gothic follow-up.
