Prudence Walker, plain and dutiful, crosses paths with wounded highwayman Sebastian Kerr and finds herself drawn into his hidden life. A Whisper of Roses keeps the Highland setting but shifts into clan politics and old feuds, with Sabrina Cameron and Morgan MacDonnell pushed together by the long hostility between their families. Both books mix attraction with real risk, and both give their heroines more backbone than their first impressions suggest.

Nobody gets a quiet courtship in this series.

The later Highland books lean even harder into adventure. Some Like It Wicked follows Catriona Kincaid, who is determined to get back to Scotland and reclaim what has been lost to her family. To do it, she recruits the reluctant rogue Simon Wescott and drags him into a journey neither of them controls for long. Some Like It Wild turns to Connor Kincaid, with Pamela Darby needing a bold Scot for an outrageous inheritance scheme. That book brings in disguises, road-trip energy, and a fake-heir plot that lets the romance play out against greed, secrets, and social performance.

Then The Devil Wears Plaid gives the series one of its cleanest Highland premises. Emmaline Marlowe is about to sacrifice herself in marriage when Jamie Sinclair rides in and carries her off. What follows is part clan feud, part mystery, and part battle of wills. The Highlands feel especially vivid here, not just wild and beautiful, but tied to old wounds and unfinished business.

Across all of these books, the tone stays inviting rather than grim. Medeiros likes banter as much as danger, and even when her heroes look forbidding, they are usually one sharp woman away from unraveling. If you want Highland romances that deliver atmosphere without sinking into gloom, this is a strong place to start. Expect family ties, stubborn lovers, and stories where desire and defiance arrive at the same time.
