Series background & context

Broken Hill High is one of Sheridan Anne's early cornerstone series, and you can feel a lot of her favorite ingredients locking into place here. The story starts when Tora Roberts is forced to move in with Nate Ryder, the guy who has made her life miserable for years, along with his younger brother Jesse. That is already enough to make senior year awful, but Broken Hill is the kind of place where one bad situation always comes with three more attached.

Nate is not just a jerk. He is the local king.

The series follows Nate and Tora across multiple books, so the appeal is less about a quick will-they-won't-they and more about watching a whole relationship get built under pressure. They share history, resentment, attraction, and a lot of emotional wreckage. Around them is a loud, messy school world full of football, parties, gossip, jealous girls, protective boys, and shifting alliances. Broken Hill itself becomes a little ecosystem with its own rules, and Tora has to learn how to survive inside it.

What keeps the books moving is that the conflict keeps changing shape. At first it is the forced proximity and bully tension. Then the outside threats get bigger, the emotional stakes deepen, and the friend group around Nate and Jesse starts to matter more and more. By the later books, the story has grown beyond simple school politics and into something more like an ongoing saga about loyalty, love, and who gets to define your future.

It is dramatic, and it knows it.

Readers who like one-couple series where every book picks up the fallout from the last one will probably get exactly what they want here. Broken Hill High has teenage chaos, but it also has genuine momentum. Tora and Nate do not fall into place easily, and that long, bumpy road is the whole point. If you like bad boys, loud feelings, and a school romance that keeps escalating, this is a strong place to start with Anne.
