Born in Blood

by Sadie Kincaid

2024

In this Broken Bloodlines origin story, Georgian rake Alastair Thorne is about to die for his sins when the mysterious Alexandros Drakos offers him a different fate. Choosing immortality over death, he’s reborn as the vampire Axl.

Series background & context

Broken Bloodlines turns Kincaid’s love of high stakes and found family into a full-blown romantasy saga. Instead of mob bosses, the power players here are immortal vampires, ancient beings of elemental magic and a heroine whose very existence has been whispered about in prophecy for centuries.

It’s darker than a standard campus romance and more romantic than a traditional fantasy quest, sitting somewhere in the best of both worlds.

The story technically begins with Born in Blood, a short prequel set in Georgian England. It follows Alastair Thorne, a charming rake whose reckless choices bring him to the brink of a violent death. Rescued—and remade—by the enigmatic Alexandros Drakos, he becomes Axl, a vampire whose long, bloody history will later collide with the heroine of the main trilogy.

Forged in Blood opens the core series in the modern day with Ophelia Hart, an orphan who just wants to become a social worker and protect kids the way no one ever protected her. An unexpected offer to attend the elite Montridge University seems like a dream, until strange abilities surface, monsters start appearing in the shadows and she discovers she’s an elementai tied to an old prophecy.

As the trilogy moves through Promised in Blood and Bound in Blood, Ophelia bonds with four powerful vampires—Alexandros and the three men he sired—and realises that the fate of their world may rest on choices they make together. Prophecies talk about a child born of fire and blood who could doom or save everyone; rival factions jockey for control; and loyalties are constantly tested.

The books are lush, violent and intensely romantic, with plenty of magic-school intrigue, epic battles and a slow build from wary allies to a fiercely protective why-choose relationship. Kincaid leans into questions about free will versus destiny, what it means to be a monster, and how far people will go to protect the family they’ve chosen.

While each installment has its own arc, Broken Bloodlines works best if you read Born in Blood first and then tackle the trilogy in order. By the time you reach the final pages, you’ll have watched Ophelia and her vampires fight, fall apart and pull themselves back together in a way that feels earned.
