Series background & context

Chicago Ruthless plants readers in the middle of the Moretti crime family, whose grip on the city’s Cosa Nostra is as uncompromising as it is bloody. Each book follows a different Moretti sibling or close associate, but together they sketch a picture of a dynasty built on loyalty, revenge and impossible love.

If you like your mafia heroes truly dangerous and your heroines stubborn enough to stand toe to toe with them, this is the place to start.

The series begins with Dante, where a young woman is forced into Dante Moretti’s orbit to repay a debt she never incurred. Dante is the kind of villain that even other criminals whisper about—cold, calculating, responsible for wiping out his former fiancée’s entire family. When he chains the heroine to him in a gilded cage, their relationship becomes a battle of wills shot through with unwanted desire.

Joey turns to a different side of the family, pairing a so-called spoiled mafia princess with Maximo DiMarco, the enforcer who has been protecting her since childhood. It’s a brother’s-best-friend, age-gap romance where devotion has to fight its way past secrecy and blood feuds. In Lorenzo, a widowed heir who walked away from the throne for love is dragged back toward power after tragedy, forcing him to confront both his grief and the possibility of opening his heart again.

The upcoming Keres shifts focus to a woman who was once a victim of the Morettis and is now their would-be executioner. Infiltrating the family estate in search of revenge, she collides with two of their security men and ends up tangled in a dangerous, polyamorous relationship where lust, betrayal and shared trauma sit uncomfortably close together.

Across all four books, Kincaid doesn’t flinch away from brutality—these are killers, after all—but she’s just as interested in the quiet scenes: late-night confessions, found-family dinners, the way trust is built and rebuilt. The Chicago novels also tie into her wider Ruthless world, with nods to the Ryans in New York and the Montoyas in L.A., making the series feel like one more bloody pillar in a much larger empire.
