Book Lover is one of Sam Hall's lighter, more obviously playful setups, though it still has plenty of chaos underneath. The series starts with two sisters, Ash and Tess, inheriting their grandmother's magic shop and assuming they are getting little more than crystals, smudge sticks, and a business on its last legs. Instead they get a failing shop, a pile of family secrets, and a gateway that can pull characters straight out of fantasy worlds and into their own.

That means the books run on two kinds of tension at once. One is practical. How do you keep the shop open, keep the portal under control, and stop the mess from swallowing your life? The other is romantic and wonderfully ridiculous. Handsome strangers keep turning up, some from books, some from other realms, and the sisters have to work out who is real, who is useful, and who is going to upend everything.

It is a very Sam Hall premise, because beneath the jokes there is still a story about women figuring out what they want.

Ash's side of the series has a frazzled, skeptical energy. She is trying to hold things together while her life keeps sliding sideways. Tess's story leans more toward adventure, impulsiveness, and the thrill of actually crossing into the fantasy worlds that keep brushing up against the shop. Together the books make the magic store feel like a crossroads, part family inheritance, part disaster zone, part romantic trap.

The tone is more humorous than many of Hall's shifter books, but the worldbuilding still matters. The portal is not a cute gimmick. It brings genuine risk, competing magical interests, and the sense that ordinary life has already cracked open beyond repair. There are dragons, princes, cursed wishes, and creatures who do not fit neatly on either side of the doorway.

If you want Sam Hall without jumping straight into wolves or omegaverse politics, Book Lover is a friendly place to start. It is portal fantasy with a rom-com streak, sister dynamics that actually matter, and a nice line in bookish wish fulfilment, especially if you have ever thought fictional men might cause more trouble in real life than they do on the page.
