Ta-Nehisi Coates's Black Panther run begins with a problem that cannot be solved by one good fight. T'Challa is king of Wakanda, the technologically advanced African nation he has sworn to protect, but many of his people have lost faith in the monarchy and want a different future. The first arc, A Nation Under Our Feet, asks what leadership looks like when the country itself is divided.

Wakanda is the real center of the story. Coates spends time with T'Challa, but also with citizens, rebels, royal guards, scientists, and spiritual figures whose views do not line up neatly. That wider focus makes the series feel less like a lone hero's adventure and more like a struggle over how a nation should be governed.

The immediate threat comes from an uprising linked to a superhuman group known as the People. T'Challa must respond to attacks and political unrest while facing critics who see the old system as broken. Familiar allies, including Storm, Luke Cage, Misty Knight, and Manifold, enter the conflict, but Wakanda's future cannot simply be decided by outside help.

Nothing stays simple for long.

The opening story unfolds across Black Panther: A Nation Under Our Feet, Vol. 1, Vol. 2, and Vol. 3. Alongside the rebellion, the books follow Shuri's connection to the Djalia, a realm tied to Wakandan memory and history. It gives the series room to explore the country beyond its palaces, weapons, and royal traditions.

The next arc, Avengers of the New World, raises the stakes in a more mythic direction. Wakanda's gods fall silent, strange threats begin crossing into the country, and old enemies see an opening. T'Challa has to defend a nation still recovering from internal conflict while confronting dangers rooted in its past.

This is a slow-burn superhero series with political tension, big ideas, and plenty of action. It is most satisfying read in order, since each volume builds on the arguments, relationships, and unfinished problems of the one before it. Readers looking for a Black Panther story that gives Wakanda's people as much weight as its king will find a lot to dig into here.
