Series background & context
Ta-Nehisi Coates's Captain America run starts after a painful public crisis. Steve Rogers has long been treated as a symbol of the country at its best, but the aftermath of Hydra's takeover has left many people suspicious of him and of what the shield represents. Steve is still committed to helping people, yet trust is now as hard to win as any battle.
The opening arc, Winter In America, introduces the Power Elite, a secretive group of influence brokers who know how to turn fear, wealth, and public anger into power. Their plans put Steve in conflict with enemies such as Taskmaster and an army of Nuke super-soldiers. The action is direct, but the bigger question is whether a national symbol can mean anything when the nation is deeply divided.
Steve is not left to handle it alone. Sharon Carter, Black Panther, Misty Knight, and other allies play important roles, while the Daughters of Liberty become a key part of the ongoing story. Coates uses the wider cast to show different kinds of courage, from public heroics to patient organizing and difficult investigative work.
Then Captain America becomes a target himself.
In Captain Of Nothing, Steve is framed for murder and pushed into a fight to clear his name. The Legend Of Steve follows him as a fugitive, working with the Daughters of Liberty while trying to expose the forces manipulating events from the shadows. These books shift the series from official missions to a more unsettled road story, with Steve moving through communities affected by corruption, violence, and distrust.
The final chapters, collected in All Die Young and All Die Young Part Two, bring the Power Elite plot toward a confrontation with the Red Skull. The stakes are personal for Steve, Sharon, and their allies, but the series keeps its attention on public life too, especially how hate can be organized and made to look ordinary.
This is a serious, character-focused Captain America story. It has prison breaks, conspiracies, and superhero clashes, but its main engine is Steve Rogers trying to live up to an ideal that people around him are no longer sure they believe in. Read the volumes in order for the clearest path through the long central conflict.
