Series background & context
The Shifter Chronicles is Crissy Smith's seven-book follow-up to the Were Chronicles. In this world, shifters have revealed themselves to the public, and that changes everything. Wolves are no longer the only group dealing with danger, prejudice, and political pressure. Bird, bear, cat, coyote, lion, hyena, and other shifters have to learn how to work together.
The link between the books is the Shifter Coalition, an organization bringing different shifter factions into a shared law-enforcement and protection network. Its members investigate murders, disappearances, bombings, kidnappings, and threats aimed at shifter communities. The Coalition also works alongside human agencies, which creates useful alliances but plenty of mistrust.
Nobody is entirely sure who is on their side.
Each book follows a new central couple while moving the wider Coalition story forward. Birds of Prey begins with division leader Cody Johnson investigating the murder of a bird shifter leader and reconnecting with Aubrey Reynolds. Bear Claw shifts to Jamie Ward, a bear shifter and Coalition unit leader, whose cases collide with a librarian's carefully guarded private life.
The series grows more procedural from there. In Eye of the Tiger, undercover agent Zak Lewis faces a decision that could expose both his operation and his conscience. Coyote's Kiss brings Coalition agents into a joint task force with the FBI and ATF. Wolf Pack follows a lone wolf trying to lead a team while a US Marshal needs help on a missing-witness case.
Later books widen the map. Lion's Claim takes an agent to a northern California town where shifters have been disappearing, while Hidden Hyena returns to the consequences of public knowledge when a town of shifters is threatened by people who want them gone. Across the series, old wounds, family rejection, and fear of being exposed sit beside the romantic plots.
The tone is paranormal romantic suspense. There are intense relationships and fated-mate feelings, but the cases matter. The characters often have jobs to finish, people to protect, and communities to defend before they can think clearly about love.
Start with Birds of Prey. The individual romances have their own leads, but reading in order makes the Coalition's growth, its alliances, and the ongoing danger much easier to follow.
