Bill Blake starts as a senior officer inside D19, an elite SAS-backed unit, but a botched raid on a Russian safehouse changes everything. Suddenly the men around him are trying to kill him, and the professional hunter becomes the hunted.

Blake is not chasing treasure and he is not solving academic puzzles. He is running, digging, fighting, and trying to work out who framed him and why. In The Operator, that trail runs into a conspiracy that reaches into the British government. In Against The Machine, Blake resurfaces in Paris and gets dragged into the brutal underworld of kidnapping and people trafficking. In Never Look Back, the action shifts to Arizona, where he tries to protect a young woman and her father and ends up uncovering corruption and an old murder in a small town.

The appeal here is how direct the books are. Blake is a classic hard-case thriller lead, highly trained, dangerous, stubborn, and not especially interested in asking permission. But Jones gives him just enough humanity to keep him from feeling like a machine. He steps in when people are being hurt. He makes promises he cannot safely make.
