Author bio
Rob Jones is a British-born thriller writer whose books lean hard into speed, danger, old secrets, and big stakes. He has written more than forty novels across action-adventure, action-thriller, and crime, building a bibliography that ranges from archaeological chases and conspiracy plots to police mysteries set in rural England.
He likes stories that move.
A lot of readers first meet him through The Vault of Poseidon, the 2015 novel that launched his long-running Joe Hawke series. From there he kept expanding, adding the Avalon Adventure books, the Hunter Files, the Jed Mason novels, the Bill Blake thrillers, and the DCI Jacob mysteries. The pace of publication tells you a lot about him as a working writer. He has built his career book by book, series by series, with a clear focus on momentum and entertainment.
His best-known books tend to put capable people under intense pressure. Joe Hawke is a former special forces operator thrown into globe-spanning hunts for relics and hidden power. The Hunt for Shambhala follows pilot Mitch Decker and Professor Selena Moore as they chase a deadly archaeological mystery. In The Atlantis Covenant, Max Hunter mixes scholarly know-how with fieldwork and danger. Then a book like The Fifth Grave shows another side of Jones, darker, more local, and more rooted in police work than treasure hunting.
That range matters.
Across the different series, some patterns keep showing up. Jones likes former soldiers, investigators, archaeologists, intelligence officers, and uneasy teams forced to trust one another fast. He also likes old manuscripts, missing relics, secret societies, buried crimes, and locations that do a lot of story work, from the Vatican and the Aegean to Wiltshire woods and small-town America. Even when the scale changes, the rhythm stays familiar: a threat appears, the clock starts ticking, and the characters have to keep moving.
The Joe Hawke books are probably the clearest example of what he does best. They blend military action, ancient history, conspiracies, and a slightly pulpy sense of fun. The Hunter Files push further into Biblical mysteries and UNESCO-flavored globe-trotting. The Jed Mason and Mason Files books strip things down into tighter espionage and relic-thriller plots. And the DCI Jacob novels bring the action closer to the ground, with murders, folklore, and police work set against the Wiltshire landscape.
In 2025, his Hunter Files career entered a new phase when the first books in that series were republished and the line was continued with new entries through 2027.
Public biographical details on Jones are fairly brief, but the basics are clear. He is originally from England and now lives in Australia with his wife and three children. That England-to-Australia path fits the books in a small way: they are rooted in British thriller traditions, but they rarely stay still for long.
If you come to Rob Jones looking for quiet literary realism, you are probably on the wrong shelf. If you want brisk plotting, international danger, hidden histories, and series that know how to end a chapter with a shove forward, you are much closer to home.
