Series background & context

The Joe Hawke books are the core of Rob Jones's action-adventure world. Joe Hawke starts out as a former Marine Commando and SBS special forces operative, a man well used to violence, discipline, and impossible situations. Very early on, though, the series makes clear that this is not only a military thriller. Hawke gets pulled into archaeological riddles, ancient conspiracies, hidden powers, and relic hunts that turn whole cities, and sometimes whole governments, into battlegrounds.

This is the big one.

A lot of the series identity comes from ECHO, the secretive and well-funded team Hawke becomes part of. Instead of sending one lone hero around the world, Jones builds an ensemble with recurring allies, private-island headquarters, layered loyalties, and long-running enemies. Lea Donovan is especially important in the early books, and the rest of the team helps give the series both scale and personality. These people fight hard, bicker, joke, grieve, and keep showing up for one another even when the situation is absurdly dangerous.

The stories love ancient secrets with modern consequences. A Greek text can lead to the Vault of Poseidon. A trail through the Shanghai underworld can connect to Genghis Khan and stolen Tesla technology. An Incan treasure, a Norse legend, a Templar clue, a hidden codex, Atlantis, and apocalyptic bioweapons can all sit comfortably on the same shelf here. That sounds like a lot, and it is, but that excess is part of the fun. The series never really pretends to be small. It goes for speed, danger, and escalation.

And it keeps moving. Joe and the ECHO team race through London, Rome, Mexico, Morocco, Peru, Washington, the Aegean, New York, Tokyo, and far beyond. The books are built like travel thrillers with very little downtime. One clue unlocks the next destination, one betrayal opens the next fight, and one old enemy usually turns out to be attached to a larger threat still waiting ahead. Even when the plot leans into lost civilizations or legendary artifacts, the storytelling stays rooted in action and immediate pressure.

What helps the series last is that it does not live on spectacle alone. Over time, the team takes real hits. Headquarters are attacked. Friends disappear. Trust fractures and reforms. Characters carry scars from one book to the next, and that gives the later novels more weight than a simple mission-of-the-week setup would. There is still plenty of over-the-top fun, but there is also continuity, memory, and a sense that every victory costs something.

Tonally, this is probably Jones's purest expression of high-octane adventure. The books mix military capability, old-history intrigue, secret societies, near-superhuman villains, and a streak of dark humour. If you like Clive Cussler style pacing, archaeological puzzles, and teams that keep running into world-ending problems, Joe Hawke is the series most likely to hook you.

Start at The Vault of Poseidon and keep going in order if you can. The threats grow, the cast deepens, and the series is most satisfying when you let the whole ECHO saga build around you.
