Author bio
Benjamin Percy was born in Eugene, Oregon, in 1979, and he grew up largely in central Oregon after a brief stretch in Hawaii. That landscape never really left him. Forests, high desert, small towns, rough weather, and people testing themselves against the wild show up again and again in his fiction.
He did not set out with some grand, tidy author origin story.
At Brown University, where he studied English and creative writing, Percy started taking writing seriously while he was writing letters and poems to the woman who would become his wife. After graduating, he went to Southern Illinois University for an MFA, studying with writers he admired and learning how to turn raw energy into finished work.
Before writing full time, he taught at several colleges in the Midwest. That teaching background seems to have stayed with him in a good way. His nonfiction book Thrill Me is a clear, practical collection of essays about suspense, story mechanics, genre, and momentum, and it has become a regular classroom book for a lot of writing students.
His early books made it clear what kind of storyteller he was becoming. The Wilding is a tense wilderness novel about three generations of men on a hunting trip gone badly wrong. Red Moon takes werewolf lore and turns it into something political, violent, and emotionally messy. The Dead Lands reimagines the Lewis and Clark journey after apocalypse, while The Ninth Metal kicks off the Comet Cycle with a strange material from the sky and the chaos that follows.
He likes pressure.
That is one reason readers tend to come to Percy for propulsive plots. Even when his books get weird, and they often do, they stay rooted in physical danger, family strain, guilt, survival, and the way old myths can flare up inside modern life. His short story collections, especially Refresh, Refresh and Suicide Woods, show the same habits in smaller form: sharp setups, uneasy people, and the feeling that violence or wonder might be waiting just off the road.
He has also built a big second career in comics and audio drama. At DC he wrote runs on Green Arrow, Teen Titans, and Nightwing. At Marvel he became closely associated with Wolverine and X-Force, and he also wrote projects involving the Predator franchise and Ghost Rider. In audio, he wrote Marvel's Wolverine: The Long Night and other scripted projects, bringing the same mix of suspense, atmosphere, and character conflict to a different form.
Awards and honors have followed, including the Whiting Writers' Award, the Plimpton Prize, two Pushcart Prizes, and an NEA fellowship. He has also worked in screenwriting and has spoken often about story craft, whether the subject is fiction, comics, or podcasts.
These days he lives in Minnesota, but Oregon still runs through the work like a live wire. If you read across his novels, stories, and comics, you can feel the same interests holding everything together: ordinary people under strain, big systems closing in, and the old animal part of human nature refusing to stay buried.
