X of Swords Books in Order

X of Swords is one of the big landmark events of the Krakoa-era X-Men books, and it absolutely leans into the word event. The setup is huge: ten champions, ten swords, and a contest that will decide the fate of Krakoa and its long-lost counterpart, Arakko.

The story grows out of Apocalypse's history and pushes the X-line into stranger, more mythic territory. Otherworld matters here. So do prophecy, ritual, magic weapons, and the bizarre whims of Saturnyne, who turns what could have been a simple war into something far more theatrical and dangerous. The result is part fantasy quest, part tournament story, part mutant political crisis.

It is wild on purpose.

What keeps it working is that the crossover still remembers character. Wolverine, Storm, Magik, Cypher, Apocalypse, and the rest are not just standing around holding shiny swords. Each champion carries a different piece of Krakoa's identity into the conflict. Some are warriors. Some are diplomats. Some seem like very odd picks until the event reveals why they matter.

Benjamin Percy is one of several writers contributing to the overall machine, and his corners of the story feed in through the grittier mutant titles. On a page like this one, the main thing to know is that X of Swords is best read as a complete event rather than sampled out of order. It is not calm, it is not small, and it is not trying to be. That is the fun of it.
