Author bio

Ben Alderson grew up in Berkshire, England, and built his career around the thing he plainly loves most, books. Long before he was publishing his own fantasy novels, he was part of the online book world, talking about reading with the kind of excited, chatty energy that helped him find a wide audience.

He came to a lot of readers first through YouTube.

In the early 2010s, Alderson started posting videos about books online, and that bookish presence became a big part of how people got to know him. He wasn't just reviewing what he read. He was also figuring out, in public, the kinds of stories he wanted to tell himself, stories full of magic, danger, queer romance, and characters pushed into impossible corners.

That interest turned into fiction with Cloaked in Shadow, his 2017 debut and the start of the Dragori trilogy. It set the pattern for a lot of what followed: fantasy settings, fast-moving plots, emotional relationships, and heroes who are often carrying more power, pain, or responsibility than they know what to do with. From there, his catalogue grew quickly.

Alderson's books tend to meet at the crossroads of fantasy romance, paranormal danger, and big feelings.

Readers who pick up his work will usually find cursed kingdoms, witches, vampires, dragon riders, fae courts, and gods who make life worse for everyone around them. Series like Realm of Fey and Court of Broken Bonds lean into court intrigue, magical politics, and sweeping romance, while the Darkmourn books, including Lord of Eternal Night and King of Immortal Tithe, play with fairy tale shapes in a darker, more monster-filled world.

He also isn't locked into one lane. Alongside his fantasy series, Alderson has written books that move closer to horror and the paranormal. The Witch and His Crow brings witches, hunters, and deadly trials into modern Oxford, while The Haunting of William Thorn shifts into queer gothic horror with a haunted English manor at its center. Even when the subgenre changes, the thread is easy to spot: high stakes, supernatural tension, and characters who are usually fighting for love, survival, or both.

His stories often return to a few favorite ingredients. Hidden identities. Dangerous magic. Old grudges. Found family. Relationships that have to survive fear, betrayal, and the occasional monster attack. Some books are sprawling series best read in order, while others are standalones set in a shared world, so readers can either settle in for a long ride or dip in through a single title.

These are not quiet books.

Alderson now lives in Oxfordshire. When he isn't writing, he has said he's usually reading, taking his Labrador Winston out for long walks, or obsessing over Marvel's Scarlet Witch. That mix, fantasy, fandom, and obvious enthusiasm for storytelling, fits his work pretty well. His novels are built for readers who want romance, magic, and trouble on the page, and who don't mind if all three arrive at once.
