Compared with Alderson's later romantasy work, Hillcrest leans more toward paranormal adventure and urban fantasy suspense, though the emotional pull is still important. Even when the books move quickly, the ongoing question stays the same: in a place supposedly built on supernatural cooperation, who is actually protecting whom?
