Dragori Books in Order

The Dragori trilogy is one of Ben Alderson's earlier fantasy series, and it has the feel of a big young adult adventure that keeps growing in scale as it goes. At the center is Zacriah Trovirn, a hunter who thinks he understands the shape of his life until he is dragged into the Elven capital of Thessolina and told he belongs in the king's new legion of shapeshifters.

The problem is that Zacriah does not actually know what he is.

That uncertainty gives the series its core pull. Zac starts as someone reacting to the world around him, trying to dodge heartbreak, keep his footing, and survive the attention suddenly fixed on him. But once he is pulled into royal politics and military plans, he has no choice but to face his hidden power. The books keep asking the same question in bigger ways: who is Zac, and what happens when the answer matters to entire kingdoms?

The setting is full-on high fantasy. There are multiple Elven continents, powerful magick, dragon-linked shapeshifters, royal secrets, and an approaching war that never stays far in the background. Zac's relationships help ground all of that. His history with Petrer matters. So does his growing connection to Prince Hadrian, who gives the emotional side of the trilogy much of its tension and warmth. Alderson balances the larger conflict with found family energy and the push and pull of romance.

Then the danger widens. In Found in Night, the aftermath of the earlier battles leaves Hadrian carrying a darkness that should worry everyone around him, while Zac and his allies learn that the Druid threat is far from over. By Poisoned in Light, imprisonment, new forms of magic, and the villain's hunt for the final Dragori push the series toward open war. The stakes get more supernatural and more desperate with each book.

This is not a quiet court fantasy. It is a trilogy of movement, hidden power, rescues, betrayals, and looming battles. The tone leans adventurous and emotional, with queer romance woven directly into the story. Because it is an earlier Alderson series, you can also see some of the interests he would keep returning to later: magical identity, chosen or forced destiny, protective love interests, and worlds where danger is never just political or just personal.

If you want to start at the beginning of Alderson's fantasy catalogue, Dragori is a good place to look. Cloaked in Shadow introduces the world and Zac's mystery, Found in Night darkens the conflict, and Poisoned in Light brings the trilogy to its war-touched finish. Read in order, it works as one long climb from confusion to revelation.
