War Of The Wood Books in Order

War Of The Wood begins with a world that is still living with the damage of an older catastrophe. More than a century earlier, the war named in the series tore through the land, killed the four ruling mages, and shattered the balance between power, bloodline, and rule. What remains afterward is not peace so much as a tense, damaged order built by families who survived and never really let go of their fear.

That history shapes everything in The Lost Mage. Maximus Wodlin has spent his life hating magic, and for good reason. When power erupts from him and kills the son of Master Gathrax, it changes his life in one instant. Instead of being executed, Max is forced into something stranger and crueler. He has to become the dead boy, take on the false role of heir, and live inside the household that should want him dead.

It is a great setup for the kind of fantasy Alderson likes best. Max is trapped, watched, and surrounded by people with their own motives. The kingdom is already unstable. The old magic that should have stayed gone is returning. Ancient dragons loom over the story, not just as spectacle, but as part of the world's buried power structure. Off to the side, the Mad Queen in the North adds another layer of dread, because the danger is never only inside one estate.

Trust is in short supply.

The mood here is more suspicious and boxed-in than in some of Alderson's other books. This is a story about false identity, survival, and power that makes a person valuable and vulnerable at the same time. Max has to learn who might help him, who wants to control him, and how much of himself he can keep while living someone else's life. The romance grows out of that uncertainty, which gives the emotional side of the story a tense, watchful feel.

Readers who know Heir to Thorn and Flame may recognize this setup. The Lost Mage is the earlier War Of The Wood version of that story world, built around the same core idea of Max, old magic, deadly politics, and dragon-linked danger. That makes this page especially useful if you want to trace how the story started before it grew into the later Court of Broken Bonds books.

So while War Of The Wood is smaller on the current database than some of Alderson's other series, the premise is strong and very clear. If you like mages returning where they should not, ruling houses full of secrets, and fantasy romance with a heavy layer of distrust, this is where that branch of his work begins.
