Beholder Books in Order

The Beholder series is Christina Bauer in a darker, more medieval fantasy mode. The heroine is Elea, a farm girl who would be perfectly happy to stay away from court politics and magical destiny if the world would just leave her alone. Unfortunately, she has powers over spirit and bone, and once an evil tsar curses her, simple farm life stops being an option.

Elea does not get to stay ordinary for long.

The series starts with survival. Elea has limited time, dangerous magic, and almost no room for hesitation. To live, she has to embrace the very necromancer abilities she would rather ignore. That sets the tone for the whole story. Beholder is about what it costs to claim power when power frightens you, and what it means to keep choosing action anyway.

Rowan is the major romantic and magical counterweight in the series. He is a warlock, an ally, a complication, and the person most likely to make Elea’s life emotionally harder even when he is trying to help. Around them, the books build out a world of cursed rulers, ambitious mages, shifting loyalties, and escalating threats that reach far beyond one village or one family. The farther Elea gets pulled from Braddock Farm, the more obvious it becomes that her personal fight is tied to the fate of a much larger realm.

The atmosphere here is different from Angelbound.

There is still romance and momentum, but the emotional texture is more gothic and more severe. Curses feel heavy. Magic has a cost. Enemies are cruel in close, personal ways. Even so, Bauer keeps the series readable and character-driven. Elea’s practicality helps a lot. She is not dreamy about the life she is being forced into. She wants to solve the problem, protect the people she loves, and survive long enough to decide what kind of future she actually wants.

If you want a Christina Bauer series with more necromancy, more curse-driven stakes, and a setting that feels older and harsher than her modern fantasies, Beholder is a strong place to go. It is still romantic fantasy, but with more bone magic, more looming danger, and a heroine who earns every step forward.
