Series background & context
Angelbound Origins is the main spine of Christina Bauer’s Angelbound universe, and it belongs to Myla Lewis. At the start, Myla is an eighteen-year-old quasi, part demon and part human, who has spent years fighting souls in Purgatory’s arena. She is tough, funny, angry in useful ways, and already suspicious of the system she lives under. Then she meets Lincoln, a prince from a demon-hunting people who has every reason to see someone like her as the enemy.
That is not a calm beginning.
From there, the series grows from a supernatural school and arena story into something much wider. Myla’s strange powers put her at the center of how souls move, how realms are governed, and who gets to control ancient magic. Lincoln becomes much more than a love interest. He is a warrior, a royal heir, and often the person trying to hold the political line while Myla charges straight through it. Together, they make the series go. Their relationship has a lot of chemistry, but it also carries real consequences for every realm around them.
Setting matters here. Purgatory is not just a backdrop. It is a working system with judges, soul towers, labor, punishments, and old prejudices built into its foundations. Beyond it are Heaven, Hell, Antrum, and other realms with their own cultures and agendas. As the books continue, Myla and Lincoln keep uncovering how connected all of those places really are. A single magical object can threaten millions of souls. A family enemy can destabilize kingdoms. One kidnapping can push the whole world toward war.
The series keeps raising the stakes, but it does not lose its personality.
What readers usually get from Angelbound Origins is a blend of paranormal romance, action fantasy, and a heroine with a strong comic voice. Myla is rarely reverent, even when standing in front of monsters, rulers, or gods. That gives the books a quick, lively feel, especially when the plot leans into prophecy, royal intrigue, and big battles. Later installments bring in marriage, parenthood, time travel, Greek gods, and even stranger branches of after-realm magic.
If you want the core Angelbound experience, this is where to begin. Read it for Myla’s voice, for the slow build of her relationship with Lincoln, and for the satisfaction of watching one scrappy fighter become impossible for the universe to ignore.
