Series background & context

August High is a Detroit private investigator built for impact. He is large, relentless, and completely believable as the last man you would want coming through a locked door. But the series is not just muscle. It works because High is also smart enough to read people, quick enough to adjust, and stubborn enough to keep pulling at a case after it becomes obviously dangerous.

Detroit is central again here, but the mood is slightly different from John Rockne's world. August High books feel bigger, hotter, and more openly explosive. A murdered artist in High Crimes, a drowning that looks too convenient in High Velocity, a missing journalist in High Caliber, and the shooting of his mentor Pops Walker in High Stakes all push the series toward conspiracies that reach well beyond one block or one neighborhood.

There is also a nice supporting thread in the people around him, including Pops and reporter Gretchen Mercer. They help give the series continuity while High keeps throwing himself into brutal jobs. If you like your detective fiction with more force and less patience, August High is Ames in attack mode.
