Series background & context

Cooper and Rockne is Ames bringing two of his best-known private investigators into the same room and letting sparks fly. Mary Cooper comes in from Los Angeles with her sarcasm, speed, and willingness to needle almost anyone. John Rockne arrives from Michigan with his steadier, bruised private-eye style. Put them on the same missing-person case and the fun starts before the first clue is even fully on the table.

That crossover setup gives the story a different rhythm from either solo line. Part of the pleasure is the contrast. Mary talks faster. John watches more. She is sharper at the edges. He is heavier in the center. When the pair are sent after a vanished rock star in Killer Groove, the book gets to play with both voices at once while also turning the case into a border-crossing crime story full of cartel danger.

If you already like one series, this page is a good bridge into the other. And if you just want two very different detectives forced to work together under pressure, Cooper and Rockne is built exactly for that.
