Series background & context

Ellen Rockne brings Ames's crime fiction into a smaller, more tightly wound space. She is the newly installed police chief of Good Isle, a northern Michigan town that looks peaceful from the outside and turns out to have plenty of buried trouble. That contrast, postcard scenery on one side, ugly motives on the other, gives the series its shape.

Unlike her brother John Rockne, Ellen works from inside law enforcement. She is not a lone PI drifting through the case. She has a badge, a town to protect, and a new job that gets complicated fast. In Murder Lake, she barely has time to settle in before a politician is killed. The appeal is watching her test her instincts against a community where everybody knows one another, and nobody wants the truth to come out cleanly.

These books are shorter and a little more compressed than some of Ames's longer series, but the familiar ingredients are still here: fast pacing, sharp turns, and crimes that expose how much damage respectable people can hide. If you want a small-town Michigan mystery with a strong lead and a brisk tempo, Ellen Rockne fits nicely.
