Author bio
Ashley Farley grew up in the salty marshes of South Carolina's Lowcountry, and that landscape never really left her. Even now, when she writes about mountain towns or Virginia neighborhoods, there is usually a little bit of coastal weather, family memory, or Southern texture somewhere in the background. She has lived in Richmond, Virginia, for most of her adult life, and those two places, the Lowcountry and Richmond, have done a lot to shape the worlds readers know her for.
Place matters to her.
Before writing became her full-time creative outlet, Farley was a mother, a volunteer, and, by her own account, someone with more ideas than hours in the day. She has said she loves travel, gardening, trying new recipes, and taking photographs. She is also serious about exercise. Tennis, circuit training, and especially swimming have all been part of her routine, and she has talked about plotting many of her novels while swimming laps.
The turning point in her writing life came after a family loss. In 1999, her brother Neal died of an accidental drug overdose at age thirty-seven. Farley has spoken openly about how addiction and mental illness affected her family for years, and how hard it was to talk about that grief out loud. She threw herself into awareness work at her son's school and helped organize leadership events for students, but the ache stayed. Eventually, she turned to fiction.
That led to Saving Ben, her first novel, which she has described as a tribute to her brother. It is not a memoir, but it carries the emotional weight of one, especially in the way it looks at sibling bonds, damage that ripples through families, and the things love cannot always fix in time.
Writing became the part she couldn't put down.
From there, Farley built a body of work centered on women facing real-life problems. In Her Sister's Shoes, she moved into the kind of Southern family drama many readers now connect with her most strongly, sisters under pressure, a beloved mother, buried hurt, and a setting thick with Lowcountry atmosphere. Books like Magnolia Nights and Beyond the Garden lean a little more toward family secrets and old houses, while Dream Big, Stella! opens up a warmer, more overtly hopeful small-town series set in the Virginia mountains.
She has also shown she likes to shift gears without losing her emotional center. The Sweeney books, the Palmetto Island novels, and other standalones tend to focus on mothers, daughters, sisters, friendship circles, and women rebuilding after disappointment. More recently, Dark Current Rising moves into mystery, following detective Lane Sutherlin through a Virginia town full of corruption, memory, and unfinished business. Even there, Farley is still interested in family history, loyalty, and the long shadow of the past.
That is probably the clearest through line in her work. Readers come for the secrets, the second chances, the small towns, the marshes, the inns, the big family tables, and the question of whether damaged people can still make a good life. Farley tends to write women who are stretched thin, emotionally bruised, or forced to begin again, but she rarely leaves them without some path forward.
These days, she still writes with one foot in Virginia and one in the South Carolina Lowcountry she remembers so vividly. She has said readers inspire her, and her books feel built for exactly that kind of ongoing conversation, stories meant to be devoured quickly, then carried around a little longer than expected.
