Author bio

Barbara Hinske spent years in Phoenix, Arizona, working as an attorney and doing the kind of writing that has to be exact. Fiction was there much earlier, though. She has said her father told her a story every night when she was a child, and later wrote mysteries himself after retirement. That habit of bedtime storytelling clearly stuck.

The turn toward novels came sooner than she expected. Late in 2010, after a car accident that broke her neck and left her dealing with double vision for months, Hinske started walking circles around her house and imagining an entire fictional world. Those walks gave her the idea for Rosemont, the grand house and small-town setting that would launch her first major series.

That idea became Coming to Rosemont in 2012. The book introduces Maggie Martin, a forensic accountant whose life is blown apart by her husband's secrets, then slowly rebuilt in Westbury around the stately house called Rosemont. Later books such as Weaving the Strands and Restoring What Was Lost show what Hinske does especially well, community life, family pressure, old secrets, public scandal, and the pleasure of watching a smart woman start over without turning into a superhero.

She likes capable women in messy situations.

That pattern shows up again in Guiding Emily, one of her most talked-about books. Inspired by a visit to the Foundation for Blind Children in Phoenix, the novel follows Emily Main after sudden blindness changes every part of her life, while a black Lab named Garth trains to become a guide dog. Hinske did hands-on research for the book, including white cane training and time around guide-dog programs, and readers often point to that practical detail, along with Garth's chapters, as part of what makes the series feel lived in.

She also writes in a lighter, cozier mood when she wants to. Paws & Pastries and Sweets & Treats bring baking, dogs, and small-town found family into the foreground as Clara Conway tries to build a new life in Pinewood. The Christmas Club goes full holiday, built around a lost bundle of Christmas Club money and the unexpected connection that follows. Both The Christmas Club and Guiding Emily later made the jump to Hallmark adaptations, which helped bring her work to an even wider audience.

But Hinske does not stay in one emotional register. Her Who's There? books, including Deadly Parcel and Final Circuit, show a sharper side, with women caught in murder investigations, stalking, and the kind of danger that arrives before anyone is ready for it. Even there, though, she stays interested in ordinary people under pressure rather than flashy larger-than-life detectives.

Home is one of her recurring subjects.

Sometimes that home is a grand estate. Sometimes it is a bakery, a guide dog's harness, or a circle of people who slowly become family. Across her books, she returns to second chances, betrayal, resilience, friendship, and the question of how a life gets rebuilt after the first version falls apart. Dogs matter too, not as cute extras, but as companions, icebreakers, workers, and sometimes the emotional glue holding a story together.

Hinske now lives in Phoenix with her husband and two spoiled dogs. She has talked about loving decorating, entertaining, cooking, and gardening, which makes sense once you have spent time in her fiction. Her books are full of welcoming kitchens, holiday tables, cherished houses, and people trying, sometimes awkwardly, to make room for one another. That mix of order, warmth, and trouble is very much her lane.
