There are chase scenes, reversals, and some nasty villains, but there is also room for family strain, trust, and the awkward hope of trying to build an ordinary life after something shattering. Overdue, set against the early pandemic, pushes that even further by tying personal danger to fear, isolation, and fraud on a larger scale.

If you want suspense that stays close to its heroine and keeps raising the stakes around her, this series does the job. The books are fast-moving, but what makes them stick is Ash herself, a survivor who refuses to let other people define the story of what happened to her.
