Author bio

Arthur Upfield was born Arthur William Upfield in Gosport, Hampshire, England, in 1890. He grew up in England, the son of a draper, and did not follow the neat career path his family had in mind. After he did poorly in examinations connected with real estate work, his father sent him to Australia in 1911 to make his own way.

Australia changed the subject of his life.

Upfield worked through a range of outback jobs and became fascinated by the country beyond the cities: stations, fence lines, dry lakes, river country, and the people who lived there. When the First World War began, he joined the First Australian Imperial Force. He served at Gallipoli and in France, and in 1915 he married Australian nurse Ann Douglass in Egypt. Their son, James, was born after the war.

After his military service, Upfield returned to Australia and spent years moving through the bush. Those miles became his library. He watched how people read tracks, weather, animals, silence, and each other. His books also carry the attitudes and language of their time, especially in the way they describe Aboriginal Australians, so modern readers often meet both sharp observation and dated assumptions on the same page.

His first published novel was The House of Cain in 1928, but the book that changed his career was The Barrakee Mystery. It introduced Detective Inspector Napoleon Bonaparte, known as Bony, a mixed-race Aboriginal Australian detective in the Queensland Police. Upfield said Bony was inspired by a tracker he had met during his travels, though the details behind that inspiration have remained difficult to pin down.

Bony made Upfield's name.

Across the long series, Upfield sent his detective into very different corners of Australia. The Sands of Windee turns on a disappearance at a remote station. Wings Above the Diamantina begins with a red monoplane and a helpless passenger on a dry lake bed. The Bone is Pointed, Death of a Lake, and Man of Two Tribes show the kind of thing readers often come to Upfield for: a puzzle tied tightly to landscape, weather, local knowledge, and patient observation.

One of Upfield's plots followed him into real life. While working on the idea that became The Sands of Windee, he discussed a method for hiding evidence after a murder. A version of that method was later connected with the Murchison Murders, and Upfield was called to give evidence. He later wrote about the case in The Murchison Murders.

He did not write only Bony books. The Beach of Atonement, The Great Melbourne Cup Mystery, Gripped by Drought, and A Royal Abduction show his interest in bush hardship, crime, racing, isolation, and melodrama. He also wrote essays and stories for magazines such as Walkabout, and his later interest in expeditions and geology fed directly into novels like The Will of the Tribe.

In his later years, Upfield lived at Bermagui and then Bowral, New South Wales, with Jessica Hawke, whose Follow My Dust! drew on his memoir material. He died at Bowral in February 1964. His final Bony novel, The Lake Frome Monster, was completed from his manuscript and notes by J. L. Price and Dorothy Stange.
