Author bio
Anneka R Walker writes romance with a strong pull toward longing, decency, and hard-won happy endings. She was raised in a very bookish home, by a librarian and an English teacher who later became a judge, so stories were part of the air early on.
That background did some heavy lifting.
Instead of only loving books from afar, Walker chose to learn how they work. She earned a bachelor's degree in English and history from Brigham Young University-Idaho, and that mix of literary training and historical interest shows up all over her fiction. Even when the setup is playful, a fake courtship, a house party, a fairy-tale twist, the social pressure and period details feel thought through.
She has also spoken about storytelling as a refuge during seasons of grief and uncertainty in her own life. That helps explain something important about her books. For all their sweetness, they are rarely weightless. Beneath the banter and the kisses-only romance, there is often loss, fear, shame, or the quiet hope that a life can still be rebuilt.
A lot of her work lives in the Regency world, but she does not stay in one lane for long. Love in Disguise and Refining the Debutante show her more straightforward historical romance side, with sharp misunderstandings, bruised pride, and characters who need to grow before love can work. Readers who like emotional payoff without explicit content tend to settle in quickly.
She also clearly enjoys a linked cast.
In the Matchmaking Mamas books, beginning with Bargaining for the Barrister and continuing through An Unwitting Alliance, The Gentleman's Confession, and The Rules of Matrimony, Walker leans into meddling mothers, close friend groups, and the slow chaos of people falling in love while insisting they absolutely will not. Those novels are a good example of what many readers come to her for: witty dialogue, tenderness, clean romance, and characters carrying private hurts that matter just as much as the central courtship.
Then there is her more whimsical side. In the Enchanted Regency books, including The Masked Baron, The Dreaming Beauty, and The Lady Glass, she folds fairy-tale ideas into historical romance without losing the human scale. The stories still care about trust, grief, secrets, and family, but there is also a misty, storybook mood that gives them a slightly different flavor. She is just as comfortable going shorter and lighter in the Regency Ever After novellas, and she has stepped outside the period entirely for the contemporary holiday romance Merry Kismet.
Her work has earned honors including a Swoony Award and an LDSPMA Praiseworthy Award. Off the page, she describes herself as a wife, a mother of five, a chocolate lover, and a believer in happy endings. That last detail may be the clearest key to her fiction. No matter how awkward, wounded, stubborn, or secretly frightened her characters are, Walker writes as if love is worth the trouble.
