Author bio

Josi S. Kilpack was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, and grew up in Utah, where books were not an obvious love match at first. She has said that she hated reading as a child until her mother handed her The Witch of Blackbird Pond when she was 13. That one novel changed her whole relationship with stories.

That was the turning point.

After that, she read widely and often, and she has credited those years of reading with teaching her how stories work. Writing came later, in the middle of regular family life. In 1998, while on bed rest during her third pregnancy, she began writing her first novel. It was accepted not long after, and the book that followed, Earning Eternity, launched a career that has moved across genres without ever feeling restless for the sake of it.

Her early novels leaned contemporary and often dealt with faith, family strain, and hard personal choices. Books like Surrounded By Strangers, To Have or to Hold, Unsung Lullaby, and Sheep's Clothing put ordinary people under real pressure and asked what they would do next. Readers who found her through those books got family drama, moral tension, and emotional stakes that felt close to home. Sheep's Clothing went on to win a Whitney Award.

She also has a strong instinct for ensemble storytelling. That shows up especially well in the Newport Ladies Book Club project, a shared series she developed with Annette Lyon, Julie Wright, and Heather B. Moore. In that set, overlapping books follow different women through the same book club circle, with Kilpack contributing Daisy and Shannon's Hope. Both books show her interest in adult lives that do not fit neat patterns, especially when marriage, parenting, addiction, regret, or reinvention start pushing people to change.

She does not stay in one lane for long.

One of her best known turns came with the Sadie Hoffmiller Culinary Mysteries, which begin with Lemon Tart. Sadie is a baker, a busybody, and an amateur sleuth who keeps stumbling into serious trouble. Over the course of books like English Trifle, Devil's Food Cake, Key Lime Pie, and Wedding Cake, Kilpack mixed cozy mystery plotting with family relationships, humor, travel, and recipes. That series helped define her for many readers, and it remains one of the easiest places to see her love of character, structure, and everyday details.

After finishing the main Sadie run, Kilpack shifted again, this time into historical romance. A Heart Revealed, Lord Fenton's Folly, Forever and Forever, The Vicar's Daughter, and the Mayfield Family novels beginning with Promises and Primroses show another side of her writing. These books are gentler on the surface, but they still care about growth, pride, grief, family expectation, and the small decisions that shape a life. She also writes national women's fiction under the pen name Jessica Pack, which says a lot about her range.

Today she lives in northern Utah and is the mother of four. She is a four-time Whitney Award winner and a Best of State winner in fiction, but the more useful thing to know is that she keeps finding new angles on the kinds of stories she wants to tell. Whether she is writing about a missing child, a crumbling marriage, a Regency courtship, or a woman with flour on her hands and a murder on her doorstep, her books tend to start with people first.
