Author bio

William Harrington was born on November 21, 1931, in Marietta, Ohio, a river town in the southeast of the state. He studied at Marietta College, earned a master's degree from Duke University, and then received his law degree from Ohio State University in 1958.

For nearly two decades, law was his working life. He practiced in Ohio, worked as an electoral adviser in Columbus during the 1960s, and later returned to legal work before making writing his full-time job in 1980. Courtrooms, police investigations, unreliable witnesses, and the gap between legal truth and actual truth became familiar ground in his fiction.

His first novel, Which the Justice, Which the Thief, arrived in 1963. It follows a robbery trial and asks whether a jury can separate the facts of the case from its judgment of the people accused. That early interest in procedure and moral uncertainty stayed with him.

He knew how much could happen once the courtroom doors closed.

Harrington's third novel, Yoshar the Soldier, moved far from the law into a grim, unnamed war. It earned the Ohioana Book Award for fiction in 1967. The book follows a battle-worn soldier trying to find his way out of violence, and it shows that Harrington was willing to write about damaged people as well as damaged systems.

His later books ranged widely through legal drama, espionage, political suspense, and stories shaped by technology. Trial puts a Cleveland detective under pressure from a murder investigation and the political forces around it. The English Lady sends an English aristocrat into Nazi Germany as war approaches. In The Cromwell File and Endgame in Berlin, threats cross borders and involve intelligence services, computers, and public danger.

In 1980, Harrington moved to Connecticut and focused on writing. He also worked behind the scenes as a collaborator and ghostwriter, including work connected with novels published under the names of other writers. It was a practical part of his career, and it fits a writer who was comfortable building plots, managing research, and making complicated institutions feel immediate.

Then came Columbo.

From 1993 through 1998, Harrington wrote six official novels featuring the rumpled Los Angeles lieutenant. Beginning with The Grassy Knoll, the books give Columbo historical mysteries, Hollywood egos, game shows, rock stars, and old secrets to untangle. Harrington kept the familiar setup, readers often know the crime early, while the pleasure comes from watching Columbo notice the small detail everyone else overlooks.

Harrington died at his home in Greenwich, Connecticut, on November 8, 2000, at age 68. His novels are an uneven but lively shelf of American suspense, especially for readers who enjoy courtroom pressure, Cold War schemes, and detectives who refuse to let a loose end stay loose.
