If you want a darker standalone thriller: Her Sister's Friends → His Last Wife
Author bio
Angela Pepper writes mysteries that move fast, lean funny, and often make room for something strange. In one corner of her catalog you get witches, ghosts, and small-town secrets. In another, you get grounded cozies and darker domestic suspense. That range is part of the fun.
Her public author bios keep the personal details fairly simple. She lives with her family on the rainy west coast, in the Pacific Northwest, surrounded by tall trees, spoiled kitties, deer, raccoons, and some truly giant woodpeckers. It sounds a little like the opening to one of her own books.
Writing did not begin as a grand life plan.
Pepper has said the turning point came when she spotted a small ad in a local free paper, The Georgia Straight, for a creative writing course at a nearby university. At the time, she was taking a sabbatical after working hard in two businesses. She thought the class would be relaxing. Instead, it turned into a full-on obsession.
She still talks about writing in practical, workmanlike terms. In one interview, she described heading to a coffee shop at 9 a.m. for her first stretch of writing, then going home for a second session before the afternoon slump hits. She likes revision best, especially the stage where a nearly finished book suddenly shows her what extra scene or bit of sparkle it needs.
That steady routine helped her build several series. Wisteria Witches became the big one, following Zara Riddle, her daughter Zoey, and the gloriously complicated Riddle family through a town full of supernatural trouble. Readers who want a non-magical cozy usually start with Death of a Dapper Snowman, where Stormy Day returns to Misty Falls and promptly finds herself in the middle of a homicide. There is also Girl in the Shadows, a lighter detective story with Abby Silver, Derek Diamond, and a beagle named Chewie. And if you want more ghosts, Pepper also wrote the Restless Spirits books and the offbeat Eli Carter & the Ghost Hackers trilogy.
She likes women who are smart, cornered, and not quite ready for what the day is about to throw at them.
Across the books, some patterns keep coming back. Pepper likes capable but imperfect heroines. She likes small towns, odd jobs, family tension, dead bodies that interrupt ordinary routines, and settings that feel lived in. Even when the plot goes supernatural, the emotional engine is usually familiar stuff: mothers and daughters, old friends, bad decisions, second chances, and the awkward business of figuring out who to trust. The tone stays readable and direct. She would usually rather make a scene move than stop to show off.
She has also written under other names. Her official site notes romantic comedies as Angie Pepper and darker psychological thrillers as Gia Pere. That side of her work includes books like Her Sister's Friends and His Last Wife, which keep the mystery element but trade the cozy town energy for sharper family tension and more dangerous choices.
Her author pages also show how much of this is still a hands-on operation. She has mentioned working with a small publishing team, and in a recent note she said the business she started in 2002 is now run by her husband while she focuses on writing and publishing. That helps explain the sheer spread of the work, from cozy mystery to paranormal comedy to darkly funny suspense.
By now she has published a lot, and the appeal is pretty easy to describe in plain language. Angela Pepper writes stories that are quick to get into, generous with character, and happy to mix danger with humor. If you like mysteries that feel neighborly even when the ghosts show up, she's easy to keep reading.
