Series background & context

The Stormy Day Mystery books follow Stormy Day, a sharp, restless young woman who returns to Misty Falls, Oregon, after a high-pressure career and finds herself drawn straight into murder cases. She is the daughter of retired police officer Finnegan Day, and she grew up around detective work even before she started solving crimes on her own. In Death of a Dapper Snowman, she is trying to settle into small-town life when she finds a frozen body hidden in a snowman. That pretty much sets the tone.

Misty Falls is a classic cozy mystery setting, but Pepper keeps it lively and specific. Stormy owns a gift shop, knows half the town, and cannot take three steps without running into gossip, old history, or some fresh complication. Her father is always nearby, her social circle keeps expanding, and the town's personalities matter almost as much as the clues. Jeffrey Blue, the mischievous gray cat, adds an extra layer of trouble and charm.

Stormy is not a cop. That is part of the appeal.

She investigates the way a smart civilian would, by asking questions, noticing people, and refusing to let go when something feels off. The series also gives her room to be funny, stubborn, annoyed, and occasionally messy. Her relationship with lawyer Logan Sanderson adds some romantic tension, but the books stay centered on the mystery and Stormy's growing confidence as a sleuth. She is believable because she is capable without pretending to have all the answers.

Each book brings a new case and a slightly different setup. Death of a Crafty Knitter pulls Stormy into a tangle of deception after an encounter with a fortune teller. Death of a Batty Genius strands her at a mountain resort with a killer. Death of a Modern King turns a suspicious death at an estate into another puzzle. Death of a Double Dipper makes things more personal by putting her friends near the top of the suspect list. The mysteries stand alone, but Stormy's relationships keep building from one book to the next.

The tone is cozy, but the stakes still matter.

These books are for readers who like small towns, amateur sleuths, and a mystery that moves without getting too grim. There is no magic here, just a clever heroine, a warm but nosy community, and enough humor to keep the darker moments from taking over. If you want a series where every case feels local and personal, and where the heroine solves crimes because she simply cannot help herself, Stormy Day is a very easy character to spend time with.
