Series background & context

The Eli Carter & the Ghost Hackers Paranormal Mysteries are Angela Pepper at her strangest, in a good way. The series opens with Eli Carter, a smart but very odd delivery driver stuck in a dead-end life, in a city where the supernatural is already part of the landscape. When he meets the smooth-talking necromancer Khan Hart, Eli gets the chance to reinvent himself by joining the Ghost Hackers. That new career choice immediately proves risky, mostly because something under Eli's bed seems determined to kill him.

This is not a gentle village cozy. It is a shorter, faster, weirder paranormal mystery series with urban fantasy energy. The world includes zombies, ghosts, necromancers, high-tech traps, and service calls that can go from awkward to life threatening in a hurry. Pepper treats all that weirdness with a loose, comic touch, so the books feel offbeat rather than heavy. If you like mysteries that tilt a little sideways, this one does that from page one.

Eli is in way over his head, and that is the point.

The ongoing thread is less about one giant conspiracy and more about Eli learning the rules of his new world. In The Cat Who Went Bump in the Night, he becomes a ghost hunter almost by accident. The Ghost Who Wasn't There gives him his first official case, which is supposed to be easy and absolutely is not. By The Dog Who Barked Fire, he has settled into the job enough to call himself a paranormal specialist, but the work is still unpredictable, and the dangers are getting bigger.

Khan Hart is a big part of the appeal. He is the kind of boss who sounds confident enough to sell you on almost anything, even when that thing is terrible for your health. The rest of the team adds to the feeling that Eli has stumbled into a business that somehow functions by charisma, improvisation, and just enough real skill to survive. The books keep asking whether Eli can grow brave and competent before the next haunting gets him first.

Expect ghosts, gadgets, and a lot of chaos.

What ties the trilogy together is the sense that Eli has finally found a place where being different might actually help. The cases matter, and the danger is real, but there is also a scrappy underdog charm to the whole setup. These books are a good fit if you want paranormal mystery with humor, quick pacing, and a hero who keeps saying yes before he has fully thought through the consequences.
