Author bio
Pepper Winters was born and raised in Hong Kong in an English expat family. Growing up there gave her an early sense of motion, distance, and contrast, and that shows up all through her fiction. Her stories rarely stay small for long. They travel, they push boundaries, and they like to drop characters into places where comfort disappears fast.
She was a reader long before she was a published author.
In interviews, Winters has talked about being homeschooled for part of her childhood and writing stories from a young age. The habit stuck. What started as imagination and notebooks eventually turned into the bigger, riskier idea of trying to build a life around books. She chased that goal until writing became her full-time work, and once that happened, she didn't stay in one lane for very long.
Her 2013 debut, Tears of Tess, put her on the map with readers who like dark romance that goes all in on danger, captivity, obsession, and emotional fallout. From there, series like Monsters in the Dark, Indebted, and Dollar helped define her early career. These are the books many readers start with, not because they are easy, but because they are intense, high-drama, and hard to stop once the story gets its claws in.
A few books later, her range became just as important as her darkness.
Alongside the darker work, Winters has written books that lean more emotional, more adventurous, or even funny. Unseen Messages is a survival romance. Can't Touch This, written under her rom-com brand Tess Hunter, shows a lighter and more playful side. The Boy and His Ribbon slows things down and digs into a long, painful coming-of-age love story. And When a Moth Loved a Bee moves into fantasy, proving she is just as interested in building whole worlds as she is in breaking hearts.
What ties the books together is the kind of people she writes. Her characters are often trapped, cornered, grieving, stubborn, secretive, or carrying damage they don't know how to name. She likes unequal power, bad bargains, fierce loyalty, and the messy stretch between survival and healing. Even when the setup is wild, the emotional engine is usually simple: two people trying to make sense of each other while the world makes that almost impossible.
Her career has mixed self-publishing with traditional publishing, including books released with Grand Central. Over the years, her novels have landed on major bestseller lists, and her work has been translated into multiple languages. She has also written across dark romance, romantic suspense, coming-of-age romance, fantasy, and standalones that don't fit neatly into one box.
These days, Winters lives in New Zealand and writes from a farm filled with animals, including horses, birds, and her well-known house rabbit, Mo. That rabbit is the reason a bunny appears on her author logo. It is a small detail, but it fits. Even with all the darkness in her stories, there is usually a strangely human, oddly tender little detail tucked somewhere inside.
