Series background & context

The Andreas Kaldis mysteries are police procedurals set across modern Greece, from the busy streets of Athens to islands whose beauty can hide old grudges, political pressure, and very current crimes. The series begins with Murder in Mykonos, when Andreas, a hard-charging Athens homicide detective, is sent to serve as police chief on Mykonos. He expects a quieter assignment. Instead, a missing visitor and a series of disturbing deaths pull him into a case no one wants discussed in a place built on its image as a tourist paradise.

As the series continues, Andreas rises to lead Greece's Special Crimes Division. That gives him a wider reach, but it also brings tougher cases and more interference from powerful people. He is politically incorrect, impatient with evasions, and not especially interested in protecting reputations. Those traits help him get results, even when they make life harder for his team and family.

Each novel gives a different part of Greece a real role in the story. Prey on Patmos moves through the religious and historical world of Patmos and Mount Athos. Target: Tinos centers on an island of pilgrimage, ethnic tension, and hidden wealth. Later books travel to the Mani, Delphi, Santorini, Lesvos, Naxos, Ikaria, and Syros. The places are more than scenic stops. Their local histories, economies, customs, and conflicts often supply the motive for the crime.

Andreas does not work alone. Detective Yianni Kouros is a key partner, with his own family ties and sharp instincts. Maggie, Andreas's longtime assistant, and other members of the Special Crimes team bring different skills and viewpoints. Andreas's wife, Lila, is also important to the ongoing story, particularly as the demands of the job keep colliding with family life.

These are mysteries with a strong sense of place, but they are not holiday puzzles. Siger uses cases to explore issues facing Greece now, including corruption, organized crime, tourism development, migration, economic stress, political instability, and the gap between public image and private reality. Ancient history and myth appear often, usually because the past still affects the people living there.

The tone balances suspense with dry humor and camaraderie among the investigators. Cases can be read for their individual puzzles, but the personal relationships build from book to book. Starting with Murder in Mykonos is the best way to meet the team and see Andreas's career, family, and country change over time.
