San Andreas Shifters Books in Order

The San Andreas Shifters books are Gail Carriger's jump into contemporary queer urban fantasy, published under the name G.L. Carriger. Instead of bustles and dirigibles, these stories give you modern Northern California, magical bureaucracy, found family, and a pack of shapeshifters trying to build a life together in and around San Francisco.

The emotional center of the series is community.

The setup begins in Marine Biology, a prequel short that shows how Alec, a werewolf, first falls for Marvin, a flirty merman. By the time the main series gets going, Alec has moved his pack and his boyfriend to the Bay Area, and the group around them keeps growing stranger and more lovable. The Sumage Solution brings in Max, a surly mage who cleans up magical messes for a living, and Bryan, the werewolf Beta who decides Max is worth the trouble. The Omega Objection shifts focus to Tank and Isaac. The Enforcer Enigma follows Judd and Colin while outside threats close in. The Dratsie Dilemma turns to Trick, an otter shifter whose past refuses to stay buried.

Each book centers on a different romance, and Carriger designed them so they can stand on their own. But there is a real pleasure in reading them in order, because the pack house, the little cafe circles, and the running friendships become richer each time. People drift in and out of one another's stories. A side character in one book can become the emotional core of the next.

The tone is warmer and steamier than Carriger's Victorian work, but it still has her usual sense of fun. There are terrible jokes, earnest feelings, and a lot of affection for people who have spent too long believing they are too weird, too damaged, or too much. Under the flirtation and chaos, the larger thread is about creating safety, making a family on purpose, and deciding who gets to belong.

Expect magical messes, pack politics, selkie trouble, strange jobs, protective friends, and a very specific love of the Bay Area. If you want queer paranormal romance that is funny, sexy, and unexpectedly tender, this is one of the friendliest places in Carriger's bibliography to settle in.
