Amy Rose Capetta Books in Order

Amy Rose Capetta is a young adult novelist who now publishes as A. R. Capetta, using all pronouns. Their books move between science fiction, fantasy, mystery, romance, and the places where those genres overlap. Magic, music, theater, and found family show up often, but the emotional center is usually someone learning how to belong.

Capetta spent their teens and early twenties in Northern California. Before writing novels, they studied theater at the Stella Adler Studio as a teenager and performed for four years with a Shakespeare troupe. That background shows in the close attention paid to performance, dialogue, and the way people become different versions of themselves around an audience.

Writing became the next focus. Capetta earned a BA in Theater Arts from the University of California, Santa Cruz, then an MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults from Vermont College of Fine Arts.

At Vermont College, they met fellow writer Cory McCarthy, who later became their spouse and coauthor. The two would go on to write the space-opera Arthurian series that begins with Once and Future.

Capetta's first novel, Entangled, introduces Cade, a guitar-playing teen living among scattered human communities in space. When Cade learns she is linked at a quantum level to a boy she has never met, the story becomes both a rescue mission and a search for connection. Its sequel, Unmade, widens the stakes while keeping Cade's music and chosen family close to the center.

Connection is never just background in these books.

In Echo After Echo, Capetta brings their theater experience to a New York production of a Greek tragedy. Aspiring actor Zara lands her dream role, then finds herself caught between a growing romance and a string of deaths at the theater. It is a backstage mystery, but it also understands the all-consuming feeling of wanting a role, a person, or a future badly enough to risk disappointment.

Capetta's fantasy novels take a different route. The Brilliant Death and The Storm of Life follow Teodora di Sangro through Vinalia, a world shaped by family power, old magic, shifting forms, and danger. The Lost Coast heads back toward Northern California, where a newcomer finds a circle of queer witches among foggy redwoods and a disappearance that cannot stay buried.

With Cory McCarthy, Capetta reworks Arthurian legend in Once and Future and Sword in the Stars. Ari Helix is a refugee who pulls Excalibur from stone and learns she is the latest reincarnation of King Arthur. The series mixes interstellar rebellion, time travel, sharp humor, and a crew that refuses to fit anyone else's rules.

Then there is The Heartbreak Bakery, a warm, funny story about Syd, an agender baker whose breakup brownies accidentally spread heartbreak through Austin's queer community. Capetta once worked as a professional baker, so the kitchen details feel especially lived-in.

Capetta lives in the Vermont mountains with McCarthy and their family, and teaches in the MFA program for Writing for Children and Young Adults at Vermont College of Fine Arts. Their work keeps returning to a simple, big question: what happens when people stop trying to survive alone?
