Author bio
Leslie Patricelli grew up in Issaquah, Washington, and wanted to be an artist for about as long as she could remember. Her grandmother was a pastel artist, and that mattered. As a kid, Patricelli drew cartoons, wrote stories, and by seventh grade she was already thinking seriously about making art her life.
She even argued with a career test.
In high school, a multiple-choice test told her she should go into forestry. She was so annoyed that she went back and changed her answers until the result came out as graphic design, which was at least closer to cartooning than lumber and trees. It is a funny story, but it also sounds a lot like the rest of her career, practical enough to work, stubborn enough to stay true to the original plan.
She studied communications at the University of Washington and then took a winding road into creative work. Early jobs included writing junk mail, helping make a self-published cartoon book about Seattle's espresso boom, illustrating outdoor products, and later creating clip art and animated help characters for Microsoft. If you remember Rover the Dog from Windows XP, that was part of her world.
Children's books were there all along.
In 1997, she took a children's book writing and illustration class at the School of Visual Concepts in Seattle, and that helped turn the idea into something real. Her breakout books were the bold, funny board books starring her almost bald Baby, beginning with Yummy Yucky, Big Little, and Quiet Loud. She has said that watching her son Beck as a toddler, especially his habit of putting everything in his mouth, helped spark the whole series.
From there, Patricelli built a body of work around the outsized dramas of early childhood. Books like Potty, Blankie, Binky, Toot, and Nighty-Night take ordinary toddler experiences and treat them with the exact level of seriousness toddlers do. That is a big part of why the books work. A lost pacifier is not a tiny inconvenience. It is the end of the world, until it isn't.
She did not stay in one lane, either. Higher! Higher! turned a push on a swing into a full imagination launch and earned a Boston Globe-Horn Book Honor. Be Quiet, Mike!, Faster! Faster!, and Bigger! Bigger! carried that same energy into larger read-aloud picture books. Later, with Best Buds Under Frogs and The Big Bad Lies, she moved into middle-grade fiction and wrote about fourth-grade friendship, embarrassment, honesty, and the social chaos of school life. The age range changed, but her interest stayed the same: kids with big feelings, sharp observations, and minds that move fast.
These days she lives in Hailey, Idaho, with her husband, Jason Vontver. Their three children are grown now, but family life still runs through her books, and her home sounds as lively as her stories, full of art, music, pets, books, and the outdoors. She has also said she loves reading, hiking, skiing, and playing clarinet in her local orchestra.
