Author bio

Alexis Hall is an English novelist who has built one of the most varied queer fiction backlists around, moving between contemporary romance, historical romance, fantasy, and science fiction. Hall began publishing novels in 2013, and from the start it was clear they were not interested in staying in one lane.

Variety is part of the appeal.

Hall writes under a pseudonym and has said that privacy matters to them. Even so, their public author persona is lively and funny, the sort of writer who can describe themselves as a genrequeer writer of kissing books and make it sound both accurate and slightly mischievous.

By Hall's own account, they did the Oxbridge thing in the 2000s, learned very little of substance, and worked a string of unusual jobs before writing full time, including ice cream maker, fortune teller, lab technician, and professional gambler. That odd path helps explain something about the novels. Even when the premises are extravagant, the people inside them feel grounded, bruised, observant, and very human.

They have always seemed more interested in people than polish.

A lot of readers first meet Hall through Boyfriend Material, the fake dating London romcom about Luc O'Donnell and Oliver Blackwood. It is properly funny, but the jokes work because Hall also understands shame, family mess, public scrutiny, and the terror of letting someone see the real you. The same blend of comedy and feeling carries through Husband Material and Father Material. Boyfriend Material also helped make Hall a much wider name, landing on several best of the year lists and cementing them as a bestselling romance writer.

If you want the more intense side of the catalogue, Glitterland, For Real, and Pansies are strong examples. These books dig into mental health, class, grief, kink, and second chances, but they never lose sight of desire or humor. Hall's characters often talk past each other, protect themselves badly, and then have to learn, very slowly, how to do better.

Hall is just as comfortable going strange. The Kate Kane, Paranormal Investigator books mix noir, vampires, faeries, and London sarcasm. The Affair of the Mysterious Letter turns Sherlock Holmes inside out inside a bizarre fantasy city, while Mortal Follies and Confounding Oaths bring queer romance, social comedy, and dangerous fairy bargains into Regency England.

Then there are books like A Lady for a Duke, Rosaline Palmer Takes the Cake, and Something Fabulous, which show how flexible Hall can be. One is aching and tender, one is built around a baking show, and one is pure Regency farce. More recently, Hall has pushed outward again with books like Hell's Heart and Never After, proving that their voice works just as well with space monsters and nineteenth century melancholy as it does with brunches, exes, and bad decisions.

Hall lives in southeast England and, in one of their own bios, mentions an extensive hat collection and four angry duckchildren. That mix of sincerity and mischief feels about right.
