Series background & context
The Ackroyd and Thackeray mysteries pair two people who approach crime from very different directions. Laura Ackroyd is a sharp, persistent reporter for the local paper. Michael Thackeray is a senior police detective who has to follow the rules, work with his team, and live with the consequences when a case goes wrong.
Their shared territory is Bradfield, a fictional Yorkshire city with clear roots in Bradford. It is a place of old mills, council estates, changing neighborhoods, crowded local politics, and people who know one another's history. Hall uses that setting closely. A murder is rarely just a puzzle. It may expose tensions over jobs, housing, race, religion, development, or who gets heard when something goes wrong.
Laura gets access to stories that do not always reach the police first. She talks to families, campaigners, colleagues, and people who distrust official channels. Her reporting can help uncover the truth, but it can also put her in danger, especially when she pushes into matters powerful local figures would rather bury.
Michael has a more formal path through the same problems. He is thoughtful and reserved, but the job keeps forcing him to make difficult calls. His investigations involve colleagues with their own worries and blind spots, and he often has to balance what he believes with what can actually be proved.
The cases are grounded, socially aware police procedurals.
The relationship between Laura and Michael is another thread that runs through the books. They care about one another, yet their different jobs, different instincts, and complicated personal histories create plenty of friction. The series lets that relationship develop gradually rather than treating it as a neat side plot.
Start with Death by Election, where Laura covers a fiercely contested local by-election as Michael investigates a body found on the moors. From there, books such as Dying Fall, In the Bleak Midwinter, and Perils Of The Night establish the rhythms of Bradfield and the push-pull between the two leads. Later entries can be read for their individual mysteries, but reading in order gives the strongest sense of the characters' changing lives.
Expect hard cases, strong local atmosphere, and mysteries that care about the people left living with the aftermath.
