Series background & context

This series is where Mimi Jean Pamfiloff lets modern romance crash headfirst into ancient myth. The setup starts with ordinary women stumbling into the orbit of Mayan gods, vampires, and other immortals who are powerful, moody, funny, and usually terrible at acting normal.

The books are connected, but they do not all follow the same couple. Accidentally in Love with...a God? kicks things off with Emma and the imprisoned god Tezcatlipoca. Accidentally Married to...a Vampire? and Sun God Seeks...Surrogate? widen the world, while later entries and novellas spend time with side characters readers already know, especially the gloriously chaotic goddess Cimil.

Cimil is the engine behind a lot of the madness. She meddles, manipulates, and drops people into impossible situations, but she also helps tie the emotional arc of the whole series together. Under all the jokes and supernatural flirting, there is a larger problem building in the background, old enemies, prophecies, and the possibility of apocalypse.

That bigger arc gives the series more momentum than a simple one-couple-at-a-time paranormal romance.

The tone is snarky, sexy, and fast. There is real danger, but there is also a lot of banter and deliberate absurdity. If you like immortal heroes, mythology with a modern attitude, and a cast that keeps bouncing off one another in increasingly wild ways, this is the sort of series that gets more fun as the world gets bigger.
