This two-book story starts with a fairy-tale setup and then makes it messier. A young woman on the edge of freedom learns that her inheritance comes with a cruel condition: she must find a husband, and the family trying to cheat her is allowed to judge the choice. So even though the duet is contemporary romance, it is not especially fluffy.

Pamfiloff still brings chemistry and sharp dialogue, but this pair of books is really held together by healing. The romance works best when the heroine starts reclaiming her own judgment, not just picking between men. If you like love stories with a strong emotional recovery arc and a slightly twisted premise, this duet is one of her more character-driven contemporary reads.
