Series background & context
The Niflheim books are some of Greenwood's harsher fantasy. They center on Orivon Firefist, a man taken as a child by dark elves and raised inside a brutal underground world that treats him as property, labor, and weapon all at once. From the start, the series is built on captivity, endurance, and the idea that surviving long enough can become its own form of rebellion.
Niflheim matters as much as Orivon does. The underground empire is cruel, crowded, and full of rivalries. Slavery is normal there. Treachery is normal there. Even kindness, when it appears, comes wrapped in danger. Greenwood uses that pressure-cooker setting to give the books a more relentless mood than many of his Realms adventures.
Orivon is not a delicate protagonist. He is physically imposing, scarred, stubborn, and very hard to break, which makes him a good fit for a story about fighting back against a whole culture of domination. The books lean into action, escape, shifting loyalties, and revenge without forgetting the cost of what he has lived through.
These are not cozy fantasy novels.
If you want Greenwood at his most grimly driven, the Niflheim pair is the shelf to try. Start with Dark Warrior Rising and expect the underworld to stay ugly.
