Elminster Books in Order

The Elminster books are Greenwood's long view of one of the Forgotten Realms' most famous figures. Elminster starts as a much younger and less settled man than his legend suggests, and the early novels are interested in how somebody becomes that kind of myth in the first place. The answer is not simple greatness. It is loss, bad choices, luck, training, survival, and a lot of magic.

These books move across a very long stretch of life. You get young Elminster, ambitious Elminster, confused Elminster, and old, dangerous, tired Elminster. Mystra matters a great deal. So do Shadowdale, Myth Drannor, Hell, Waterdeep, and the many people who either love him, need him, or would be happier if he finally stayed dead.

The series is not small-scale fantasy. Greenwood likes old empires, wizard feuds, divine pressure, and hidden history, and Elminster is a natural way to walk through all of that. But the books are also full of sharper human stuff, pride, desire, loneliness, family trouble, and the problem of what it means to keep living when you have outlasted almost everyone.

He is never just a wise old man in a robe.

If you want a clean, tightly bounded quest, this may not be Greenwood's neatest shelf. If you want a character who feels fused to the bones of a setting, it is exactly the right one. Start early if you want the making of the legend. Start later if you want the Realms at full magical temperature, with Elminster already tangled in everybody else's disasters.
