Series background & context

The Band of Four books take place in Aglirta, a realm so broken that it is known as the Kingless Land. Barons feud, old wrongs still shape the present, and people cling to legends because ordinary politics has failed them. That gives the series a strong sword-and-sorcery feel, but Greenwood keeps pushing it toward court intrigue and larger myths.

At the heart of the story are four companions. Hawkril is the hard-hitting warrior. Craer is a thief who is usually thinking faster than everyone around him. Sarasper brings healing and long experience. Lady Embra Silvertree supplies noble blood, sharp will, and dangerous magic. They are not polished heroes. They are the sort of group that survives by wit, nerve, and refusing to quit.

The early books turn on prophecy, especially the hope that a sleeping king can restore the land. That sends the story after the Dwaerindim stones, through baronial schemes, ambushes, betrayals, and the kind of old magic that never stays politely buried. Even when the plot grows larger, the series keeps one foot in the mud and disorder of a country that has been damaged for a long time.

This is a rowdy series.

If you like fantasy parties that feel as though they came out of a game table, but are dropped into real political trouble, Band of Four is a good fit. The tone swings between banter, danger, and looming doom, with dragons, sorcery, and succession fights always close by. It is best read in order, because the state of Aglirta changes from book to book, and the friendships are part of the point.
